Master cylinders

I need to buy 3 new master cylinders for the balance bar pedal box. Shaws motorsport have girling TYPE cylinders for around £20 each which is approx half the price of genuine Girling ones, i know you get what you pay for but i doubt that shaws would sell total crap!.
What does the team think??.

I would think they would be OK as long as the bore is correct.
Problem may be getting a rebuild kit in the future if the seals are not the same as the Girling
Are your old ones beyong repair? Could you not rebuild them?

Hi Matnrach,

I believe that the girling seal kits will fit as the cylinders are copies of the originals, i just wonder what they are made of!.
I do have a collection of old cyld's but they are all combat worn and have the wrong pushrod for a balance bar anyway.
I saw the pics of your Mk8 (very nice indeed!) and assume you have the Davrian balance bar set up with 4 discs, what cylinder bores are you using?, i was going to fit .625 on all three.

Hi Dave,
All 3 of the cylinders are Girling part number 310360 which is 0.625" bore.
I have converted my old Triumph calipers to Wilwoods to save weight and they work fine.

Hello,

I've not been joined long and am rebuilding a mk 5 which I am painstakingly restoring to better than it's original specification.

I was the original owner ,so I still have all the build details right down to the original wiring diagram.

Naturally I am adding some up to date features not available the first time around.

One thing I have bought is an adjustable brake limiting valve which I am lead to believe will be a lot easier and simpler way of preventing the front wheels locking on heavy braking.

I have front discs and rear drums by the way

Perhaps someone will be able to advise on the relative pros and cons of using this on a Davrian.

Hi Dave. how about boring out the old cylinder and sleeve it with st/ steel
I've done this on obsolete vintage wheel and master cylinders.It will last a
life time well worth it.

I have stainless lined many cylinders on classic cars with great success apart from one which leaked due to a porous casting. However i figured that at £70 for all three new it didn't seem worth it this time!. I had one of the cylinders stripped and checked just to be sure of the quality by Lee at classicar automotive and he said it was fine.

Hi Hal,

Yup Cylinders are still fully operational, no leaks, corrosion or dampness!!. I sent one to a brake specialist who was happy with what he found inside and the guy at shaws (based at Mallory park) told me most of the cylinders he supplied were for motorsport and he didn't want any being returned faulty!. I've bought another 3 for my MK6.

Are the eBay ones from the same source? Shaw's don't seem to have a website, or the server's down.
